Who Am I?

from Treelines and Skylines by Folkstar

/

about

"Who Am I" is a result of my time spent in hospitals after my father's heart surgery caused strokes, leaving him with partial mind and partial body and requiring constant care - something he would not have wanted for himself. I constantly replay the conversation I had with my father about his medical wishes and think about what I would want for myself. I think a lot about how our medical culture keeps people "alive" no matter what, without a clear understanding of what that means.

Who Am I? (lyrics)

Who am I?
I want to grow old and gray
Unburdened by a hospital stay
I want to die the way I please
I want to be taken by the trees

These days we poke and prod
We're kept alive long after we're gone
Our bodies fail, our brains decline
Bury our souls somewhere inside, somewhere inside

When you can no longer breathe
We'll breathe for you
When your heart stops
We'll make it start again for you
Still on this earth
Without my mind
I shuffle along
Please tell me
Who am I?

An army load of poisons in me
A million doctors trying to see
What I need - Turn off the light
I'm not alright

An operation successful in their eyes
Despite it going horribly awry
My expert maintains his status
While I smile and cry, smile and cry

When you can no longer breathe
We'll breathe for you
When your heart stops
We'll make it start again for you
Still on this earth
Without my mind
I shuffle along
Please tell me
Who am I?

When you can no longer breathe
We'll breathe for you
When your heart stops
