Taken by the Sea

from Treelines and Skylines by Folkstar

/

about

"Taken by the Sea" is the story of a woman who has been afflicted with a terminal illness. The only time she doesn't feel pain is when she is swimming in the sea, and she decides that she would like to slip away peacefully before she loses all sense of who she is and the pain becomes unbearable. The "Death with Dignity" movement is a controversial one which has lately triggered lots of debate, largely due to the outspokenness of Brittany Maynard. Maynard was a 29-year-old woman with terminal brain cancer who opted to legally end her own life in the state of Oregon when her pain became too great, rather than prolong her own suffering as well as that of her family. This is not a song advocating suicide, and I encourage anyone grappling with the pain of mental illness to seek professional help. This song is about a person taking her life into her own hands when medical science can no longer treat her.

Taken by the Sea (lyrics)

She knew the water would be warm that day
Inside the cove next to the bay
The waves high enough to lift her away
To float and dance and sway

Her favorite place in all the world
Where she would take her baby girls
Before they grew old enough
To see the world alone

No one knew that she came
Weak in flesh and bone
She came to breathe the breath of life
And then to die alone

Taken by the sea
Dip and crash
Duck and laugh
Sweeping her away

They refused to understand
Wishing that she would be saved
But that day among the waves
She washed her pain away

No one knew that she came
Weak in flesh and bone
She came to breathe the breath of life
And then to die alone

Taken by the sea
Dip and crash
Duck and laugh
Sweeping her away

She knew the water would be warm that day
Inside the cove next to the bay
The waves high enough to lift her away
To float and dance and sway
