Mistress

from Treelines and Skylines by Folkstar

about

"Mistress" was written at the end of a relationship with someone whose goals for the future were different than mine. I had just made the decision to pursue music in a way that could involve some radical changes such as touring and leaving a traditional 9-5 job. Although those changes didn't come to fruition until a couple of years later, at the time I realized I couldn't be with someone who couldn't be okay with a traveling musician's lifestyle as a possibility. At the same time, a lot of my friends had begun to get married and have children and my choice seemed that much heavier. I wanted that stability and envied some of the things these friends had. I felt like I was being left behind in a whirlwind of uncertainty, yet I knew I wouldn't be happy unless I really dedicated myself fully to music. Several years later, I know I made the right choice.

Mistress (lyrics)

Another friend engaged, a wedding cake
Then a baby due next June
In my empty house, there's a suitcase packed
Because I'll be leaving soon

You had a dream for us
We'd move in and start a life
Working 9-5, I'd be your bride
We'd save up to retire

But that's love
It makes us do silly things
Like sitting still
When we hate settling
But I don't regret a thing
And all I can do is sing

La da di la di la la la, la di la la la

They'll all be settled down
And I'll have nothing to show
Except words on a page
A soul uncaged
And too many nights on the road

But that's love
It makes us do crazy things
Like choosing a guitar
Over a wedding ring
But I don't regret a thing
And all I can do is sing

La da di la di la la la, la di la la la
